Pieper girls overpower MacArthur in second round of soccer playoffs
Pressure was the name of the game for Pieper as the Warriors unleashed an unrelenting attack against MacArthur on Tuesday at Warrior Coliseum.
The Warriors spent virtually the entire game in Brahmas territory, and this pressure resulted in multiple salvos of shots in their 8-0 win via mercy rule in the second round of the Class 5A Division II girls soccer playoffs.
Pieper advances to the regional semifinals to take on the winner of Laredo Nixon and McAllen Rowe.

Bears take down Bulldogs in Bi-District soccer playoffs
The name of the game for La Vernia in their opening round playoff matchup with Somerset on Friday, March 21, was “pressure.” The Bears used relentless pressure on the offensive side to down the Bulldogs 2-0 at the Sonny Detmer Athletic Complex in Somerset.
For virtually the entire first half of the match, the Bears had the ball in Somerset territory. Head Coach Manuel Amador’s squad had nearly a dozen shots on goal, while sophomore goalkeeper Adrien Ruiz slammed the door shut on the Bulldogs ...
Roadrunner Field - UTSA Roadrunners
In 1992, the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) expanded its athletics program to include baseball. The Roadrunners began play at their new on-campus home, Roadrunner Field, the very next season. Almost from the outset, UTSA began making an impact on the college baseball scene.
I visited a small Texas town made famous by a Hollywood superstar
Since its earliest days, the motion picture industry has carried on a steady love affair with the Great State of Texas. From early Academy Award winners like Wings to historical epics like the two versions of The Alamo to biopics such as Selena, Hollywood flat-out loves Texas.
In 1998, rising film megastar Sandra Bullock teamed up with crooner and fellow rising film star Harry Connick, Jr. in the film Hope Floats and introduced the rest of the world to the tiny town of Smithville. Bullock pla...
Faith Mayfield shuts down Taft as O'Connor takes first place in 28-6A softball race
For five innings Tuesday, O’Connor sophomore pitcher Faith Mayfield was nearly unhittable.
With first place in District 28-6A on the line against Taft, Mayfield shut down the Raiders, while the Panthers’ offense exploded for a 10-0 win at the Northside Sports Complex.
Mayfield tallied 14 strikeouts on the night, and she retired 15 of the 16 batters she faced and carried a no-hitter through 3⅓ innings. O’Connor’s lineup made sure it was never close and ended it via run rule after five innings....
Tasting the 'World's Best Chicken Fried Steak' in this tiny Texas town
If you're a traveler of the Texas highways like me, you probably have your favorite spots scattered along the access roads that filter out to every small town north, south, east, and west of the Alamo City.
As a frequent visitor to our beautiful Hill Country, I've made the drive north on U.S. 281 more times than I can count. I definitely have my favorites, but there has always been this one spot. For some reason, the Hill Country Cupboard in Johnson City has always intrigued me, but I've neve...

Inside the oldest restaurant in San Antonio, a 109-year-old Texas staple
When "Papa" Fritz Schilo opened his namesake restaurant in San Antonio in 1917, I would be hard-pressed to believe that even he would think his spot would still be going strong well into the 21st century. However, that's exactly what Schilo's is doing.
Veterans Memorial outpaces Jay to advance to 5A Division II regional semifinals
An emphatic fourth quarter dunk by senior Zydon Clark sealed the deal for Veterans Memorial in a 73-60 win over Jay in a Class 5A Division II second-round playoff game Friday at the Alamo Convocation Center.
The dunk was the last of Clark’s team-high 13 points, but he combined with eight other Patriots in a well-balanced scoring attack.

Reagan boys basketball takes down Warren in first-round playoff game
For the first three quarters of Reagan’s win over Warren in their playoff opener, it was the Christian Kelley show.
The talented senior guard scored 21 points before he exited with two minutes left in the game with a lower leg injury. At the time, Kelley and Warren’s Devin Peterson had been locked in a scorer’s duel.
Peterson’s 22-point night helped keep the game close, but the Rattlers put the Warriors away 69-51 on Friday at Littleton Gym and extend their winning streak to 12 games.

Visiting an iconic 88-year-old Texas comfort food cafe in San Antonio
Nothing brings me more joy than dining at a restaurant with history. If a place has been around since my grandparents were teenagers, I know it has something that keeps people coming back for generations.
In 1938, Winnie and Pappy DeWeese opened up DeWeese's Tip Top Cafe. Offering up mile-high piles of house-made onion rings, golden fried shrimp, juicy T-bone steaks, and about a dozen pies, Tip Top Cafe became a fan favorite of San Antonians from all walks of life.
The restaurant's website pr...

Wagner (34-0) kept its perfect season intact and matched its win total from last season in the process. The District 26-5A champions take on Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial in the regional semifinals next week.

MacArthur shrugged off a slow start and sprinted into the second round Tuesday with a 67-45 win over Sam Houston in a Class 5A Division II girls basketball playoff opener at Littleton Gym.
MacArthur senior guard Ellie Lee led the way with 20 points, and the Brahmas surged ahead in the second quarter to grab a lead they never relinquished.

UIL shake up: Changes for some area teams
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) unveiled its biennial district realignment Feb. 2, impacting every school district in the state. The UIL does this on a regular two-year cycle to reclassify and realign schools based on their population to try and ensure a more level metaphorical playing field in sports and extracurriculars.
